In the dramatic comedy Nathan the Wise, a sultan must keep Muslims, Jews, and Christians at peace in a Jerusalem under attack during the Crusades. Nathan, a Jewish merchant and the sultan’s richest subject, returns to Jerusalem to find his house burned down and his only daughter, Rebecca, rescued from the fire by a Christian Templar Knight. As Nathan attempts to thank Rebecca’s savior, he becomes embroiled in the story of the Templar’s relationship with the Muslim sultan who spared the knight’s life.
