About This Show

In a small bungalow in St. Petersburg, Florida, a dying Jack Kerouac draws to himself visions of past friends and lovers. Time and space twist during the last hour and a half of his life as Kerouac is ‘visited’ by fellow Beats Allen Ginsberg and Neal Cassady. The witty conversation between the three revealingly navigates the author’s life, while, in a parallel action, two journalists compose the mythic Beat writer’s obituary.

Jack also recalls his time with the quasi-historical prostitute O’Neil calls Red, an apparition of longing and lust. These visions come to Kerouac with a jazz resonance. The players jointly explore the cultural and historical scope of the play while Kerouac is faced with the final opportunity to examine his life.

Biography and fiction mingle in scenes that are both dream-like and direct, and Kerouac is observed as a passionate human being, self-chosen martyr, graceful, and flawed. The journalists mirror Jack’s visions as they consider his legacy. Awakening from this ‘fever dream’ of a production, the audience is left with a hard look at personal and cultural myth.
