Cymbeline, king of Britain, wants his daughter to marry the boorish Cloten, but the defiant
Imogen has already wed the curiously named commoner, Posthumus Leonatus. Beside himself
with rage, the king banishes Posthumus, who flees to Rome. Once there, he boasts to the
unscrupulous Iachimo of his wife’s fidelity; Iachimo wagers he can seduce Imogen (he can’t, of
course, as her virtue is beyond reproach). But he manages to fake it, unleashing a torrent of nearpreposterous
events that take the action all over the European map.
