About This Show

This splendidly diverse group of artists has one thing in common: they’ve all recorded for Damon Albarn’s independent London-based label Honest Jon’s. Albarn, best known from his days as Blur’s frontman and the wildly successful virtual band Gorillaz, co-founded the Honest Jon’s label in 2002, taking its name from the landmark record shop on London’s Portobello Road. The label’s first release was the sublime and acclaimed Mali Music, featuring Albarn and Afel Bocoum, a sideman to the legendary Ali Farka Toure. Since then, the Honest Jon’s label has specialized in music that breathes a similar attitude no matter how disparate it may seem — from post-war black music in Britain to African highlife, from ’70s British folk music to American Southern soul.

Under the musical stewardship of Damon Albarn, these wonderfully eclectic artists will play together and separately, from the magical Malian blues of Lobi Traore to the blazing brass of the Hypnotics and the fragile folk of Simone White.
