An Uncommon Woman: A Celebration of Wendy Wasserstein and Music

About the Show

In honor of Wendy Wasserstein’s contributions to the arts and the world of opera, Glimmerglass Opera presents An Uncommon Woman: A Celebration of Wendy Wasserstein and Music. The evening features readings by Emmy Award-winning actresses Stockard Channing and Allison Janney (The West Wing), in addition to performances by alumni of Glimmerglass Opera’s acclaimed Young American Artists Program and members of the acclaimed Chamber Singers of Mount Holyoke, Wasserstein’s alma mater. Soprano Monica Yunus and baritone Matthew Worth, accompanied by pianist Djordje Nesic, peform songs from Pamela’s First Musical, a show Wasserstein adapted from her children’s book of the same name. In addition, there is a screening of excerpts from Wasserstein’s The Festival of Regrets.

Wendy Wasserstein, whose stage and film works have spoken to generations of women and to society at large, is best known for her award-winning plays, including The Heidi Chronicles, which won the Pulitzer Prize and a Tony Award in 1989. She also influenced the world of opera with her libretto for The Festival of Regrets, one of three one-act operas featured in the operatic trilogy Central Park, which was commissioned by Glimmerglass Opera and given its world premiere at the company’s Alice Busch Opera Theater in 1999.
