About This Show

“Dancers Over 40” hosts A Tribute to Phil Black.

Some 100 friends and students honor a man whose life touched, inspired and nurtured so many dancers within the theatrical and film community. In the Seventies, Eighties, and Nineties, dancers from all over the world would travel to New York City to study with Phil Black at “The Phil Black Dance Studio” on 50th Street & Broadway. For 30 years he dedicated his life to teaching the art of dance, in both jazz and tap and preparing his students to get jobs. 70 percent of his students ended up working in show business.

Some notable Broadway and Film stars who have graced his studio include: Danielle Brisbios, Greg Burge, Irene Cara, Charlotte d’Amboise, Terri Garr, Goldie Hawn, Gelsey Kirkland, Christine Langner, Jimmy Litton, Jennifer Lopez, Priscilla Lopez, Madonna, George Marcy, Johnny Mathis, Eddie Mekka, Bette Midler, Cynthia OnRubia, Anna Bella Sciora, Marlo Thomas, John Travolta, and the Twyla Tharp Dance Company.

Now 80 years old, and living with Parkinson’s Disease, Phil Black retired from teaching just 5 years ago. Although he no longer teaches he gave his students the gift of dance which will forever be remembered. The Tribute for Phil Black is an opportunity for his students to honor his life, his
dedication, and to simply say, “Thank you.”
