About This Show

Weaving together folk-ethnic and modern musical styles, A Night in the Old Marketplace is a phantasmagoric reinvention of Yiddish writer I.L. Peret’z classic dramatic poem Bay Nakht Oyfn Altn Mark.

Conceived as a cabaret musical that crosses traditional klezmer with Kurt Weil, Tom Waits and other avant-garde influences, A Night in the Old Marketplace tells the story of a modern-day wedding entertainer who regales the late-night stragglers at a wedding reception with the story of a mad wedding entertainer from the past who cast a spell on the town’s gargoyle and, in doing so, awoke the dead.
