About the Show

Renowned choreographer Maida Withers unveils her Washington, D. C. based company in a special presentation of her visually moving Utah * Spirit Place * Spirit Planet * Tukuhnikivatz.

This evening length multimedia installation and performance piece, based on ancient and contemporary earth consciousness, was commissioned by Lincoln Center for their popular GREAT DANCE in the Bandshell series. Dance critic, Jennifer Dunning, of the New York Times described “a work drawn from the ancient art of American Indians and the rugged wilderness of Utah …Withers’ piece was ambitious and awesomely complex, filling the stage of the Damrosch Park bandshell with layer upon layer of huge video images and photographs projected on rocklike sculptures. Live bodies moved among them, both dancers and ceremonial figures. …Evoked a midworld between dreams and everyday reality.”

The compelling collaborators in this cutting edge production include: Maida Withers, concept/choreography/video; Brent Michael Davids, Native American/Mohican composer and music ensemble; Bruce Hucko, earth photography; Adam Peiperl, kaleidoscope photography; Verabel Cluff, Stefanie Altomare-Sese, video; Jennifer Kinloch, visual installation; Thomas Fiocci, set; Turker Ozdogan, masks; Kellie Owens, costume design; Spencer Brown, light design and of course the fabulous dancers.
