Josephine Rogers Ward is the rightful heir of the Ward family fortune—or is she? Her cousin Hutch claims that since Jo transitioned to female, the estate, historically entailed to a male heir, is actually his. Thus, Jo is confronted with the prospect of denying who she is in order to claim the birthright, and raising questions of identity, legitimacy, and elitism. Caught in the conflict are Jo’s fiancé and Hutch’s live-in girlfriend, who must bring Jo and Hutch to a compromise of mutual self-interest or see the possible dissolution of the Ward family estate at the hands of the Court.
