Once on this Island Junior, featuring lyrics by Lynn Ahrens and music by Stephen Flaherty, is based on the novel My Love, My Love by Rosa Guy, a modern version of the Hans Christian Anderson tale. Set on a Caribbean island in which the wealthy and poor classes constantly clash, the story centers on a young peasant girl named TiMoune, who saves the life of a rich boy. The young couple is convinced that it was the will of the gods for them to meet and while they do fall in love, they can’t stay together. Faced with the difficulties of social barriers as well as the will of the gods of love, earth, water, and death, TiMoune must face a journey that will test the strength of her love.
