It’s 1963 and the Watsons, an African-American family from Flint, Michigan, travel to Birmingham, Alabama, to take their juvenile delinquent son, Byron, to live under what they hope will be the civilizing influence of his grandmother. The struggle to mend their family lands them in one of the darkest moments in America’s racial history — the 16th Street Baptist Church bombing.
The Watsons Go to Birmingham – 1963 received the Newbery Honor and the Coretta Scott King Awards.
