Rise and Fall of the City of Mahagonny

About the Show

Controversial at its 1930 premiere, this brilliant and acerbic work from the legendary team of composer Kurt Weill and playwright Bertolt Brecht – perhaps best known for The Threepenny Opera – continues to provoke today. Set in the city of Mahagonny and chock-a-block with whiskey, women and gambling fools, this sharply satirical opera raises an ironic eyebrow at capitalist society. The rollicking score to Rise and Fall of the City of Mahagonny has a masterful blend of opera and music hall songs, including the classic “Alabama Song.”
