Before My Fair Lady, Eliza Doolittle conquered the polite society of England and our hearts in G. Bernard Shaw’s most beloved play Pygmalion. As long as Eliza speaks like a commoner, she will never be able to work in a flower shop. When she goes to Professor Henry Higgins, however, he wagers that he can not only lift her off the streets, but that he can elevate her right up to the aristocracy. With delightful supporting characters such as Colonel Pickering and Eliza’s father Alfred Doolittle, Pygmalion good-naturedly asks us, “Who is the teacher in this play?”
Broadway’s Patrick Ryan Sullivan will play “Prof. Henry Higgins.”
