Once on This Island

Set in the Caribbean’s French Antilles, Once On This Island combines themes from The Little Mermaid with tragic strains from Romeo and Juliet. Written by the award-winning team of Lynn Ahrens and Stephen Flaherty and based on the novel, My Love, My Love by Rosa Guy, the show tells of the romance between Ti Moune, a poor peasant girl, and Daniel, an upper class boy from the other side of the island. Hampered by deep social prejudices and the meddling of the four gods who rule the island – Erzulie, the Goddess of Love; Asaka, Mother of the Earth; Agwe, God of Water; and Papa Ge, Demon of Death – their love will be sorely tested.
