About the Show
In Intimate Apparel, Esther Mills is a single African American woman in early twentieth century Manhattan. She sews luxurious lingerie for ladies of society and ladies of the night. Successful and in high demand, she is, nonetheless, lonely. Delicate secrets are revealed and lives are laced together with the help of a wealthy white client, a Jewish fabric merchant, and a Caribbean laborer on the Panama Canal. Dreams are fulfilled, hopes lost, and trust betrayed, as friendship and familiarity create a pattern as complex and exquisite as Esther’s stitches.
