About the Show

A complex plot, comedy, tragedy, love and satire all make The Mikado one of Gilbert and Sullivan’s best-loved operas. Wheaton College’s Opera Music Theater, directed by Sarah Holman and conducted by Mary Hopper, performs this great hit in Edman Memorial Chapel. This performance marks the 50th anniversary of the first Mikado performance on Wheaton’s campus.

Written in 1885, this piece was one of the first western stories to depict Japanese life and culture. The Mikado was an instant hit with audiences world-wide. This love story gone awry with unexpected twists in the plot keeps the audience guessing throughout the opera.
