About the Show

William Russell, a wit and scholar with high liberal principles, and Joseph Cantwell, an ambitious and hard-driving senator, are in a heated race for their party’s presidential nomination. Ex-President Arthur Hockstader, who loves politics for their own sake, is determined to have the final say in the selection. Gore Vidal’s The Best Man examines the nature of people who are drawn to power, and the lengths they might go to obtain the highest office in America. Remy Bumppo’s production is timed to coincide with, and create a dialogue about, the mid-term elections.

On Sunday, October 1 at 1:30 PM the Remy Bumppo Literary Lecture Series hosts The Best Man Literary Lecture. The Remy Bumppo Literary Lecture Series features some of Chicago’s most exciting thinkers as guest speakers in pre-show discussions addressing the themes found within each play. Each event consists of a 30 minute lecture followed by a question and answer session. Admission is $10.00 and includes a study guide and refreshments but does not include a ticket to The Best Man. For reservations and more information, call 773-871-3000.

Two Wednesday matinees are scheduled for 2:00 PM on October 4 and October 18. These matinee performances replace the regularly scheduled 7:30 evening show.
Due to the Opening Night performance scheduled for 7:00 PM there is no 2:30 PM matinee on Sunday, September 24.

Tickets for the Opening Night performance also include admission to a post-show reception.
Student Rush tickets are available for most performances beginning 30 minutes prior to curtain; they are $10.00
