The African Company Presents Richard III, written by Carlyle Brown, is based on a true story dating back to 1821. Forty years before Lincoln abolished slavery and 50 years before black Americans gained suffrage, the first black theatrical group in America dared to present William Shakespeare’s work through their interpretation of Richard III. Brown’s retelling of this pivotal event depicts the challenges faced by the company as they prepare to unveil a classic tale, in a fashion that challenges the prevailing wisdom and mores of the day.
The opening night performance on Sunday, September 17 is scheduled for 6:00 PM.
Tickets for the 2:00 PM Saturday matinees are available 2-for-1.
