Adapted by Oscar Hammerstein II from the novel Anna and the King of Siam by Margaret Landon, The King and I is based on Anna Leonowens’s experience as a teacher in the Royal Palace in Bangkok during the 1860s. When the British “Mrs. Anna” meets the King of Siam, sparks fly as the two disparate, willful characters learn about each other’s culture and themselves. With music by Richard Rodgers and lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein II, the time-honored score features some of the best-known melodies in musical theater, including “I Whistle a Happy Tune,” “Hello,Young Lovers.” “Getting to Know You,” “Something Wonderful,” “My Lord and Master,” “A Puzzlement,” “Shall We Dance?” and “We Kiss in a Shadow.” The second act features the striking “The Small House of Uncle Thomas” ballet, originally choreographed by Jerome Robbins.
