About This Show

The 4-Way Quartet has quickly become one of Cincinnati's leading chamber groups with multiple sold-out appearances in the metropolitan area. Wilmington College will host the ensemble Feb. 21, at 7:30 p.m., at the historic Murphy Theatre in downtown Wilmington.

The 4-Way Quartet's appearance is the second program in the Music Department's 2022-23 Chamber Music Series. Tickets are $12 and available through the Murphy Theatre Box Office and website (www.themurphytheatre.org). College students with an I.D. and those under 18 will be admitted free of charge.
The group features cellist Nat Chaitkin, violist Kevin Boden and violinists Shannon Lock and Maggie Niekamp.
Their program will highlight a wide variety of music from across the history of the string quartet literature — everything from the 1700s to the present day.
Since its founding in 2015, the 4-Way Quartet has performed in settings ranging from the Aronoff Center and Taft Museum to libraries and breweries. They also regularly play in chamber music's original setting, private homes, to raise funds for the group's innovative education program, the 4-Way String Project.
Now in its seventh year, the program offers free private lessons and chamber music instruction to economically challenged students in Norwood. The quartet will be joining one of Music Professor Brianna Matzke's classes at WC on the day of their concert.
"It's a chance for my students to get to know professional musicians and to understand the art on a deeper and more personal level," Matzke noted.
The 4-Way Quartet's program at the Murphy Theatre will include folk-tune settings from "Sonderho Bridal Trilogy" and "At the Purchaser's Option" by Rhiannon Giddens, in addition to pieces composed by Beethoven, Schubert, Borodin and the living American composer, Philip Glass.
Lock is a graduate with two degrees from the University of Cincinnati's College-Conservatory of Music (UCCCM). She has performed with a wide variety of ensembles in the Midwest and has taught privately for six years. She strives to cultivate inclusive and accessible classical music environments as both performer and educator.
Niekamp, who recently received her master's degree in violin performance from UCCCM, is a graduate with a bachelor's degree from the Cleveland Institute of Music. Her love for chamber music was nurtured through studies at CREDO summer music festival in Oberlin. An avid orchestral musician, she plays violin with orchestras in Dayton, Kentucky and Des Moines.
Boden is an avid performer and teacher of viola and holds two degrees from the Cleveland Institute of Music. He made his solo debut at 16 years of age with the Spokane Symphony. His passion for chamber music intensified while working with the Cavani and Juilliard string quartets. He regularly plays with orchestras in Cincinnati.
Chaitkin enjoys a wide-ranging career as a cellist, teacher and advocate for concert music. He is equally obsessed with Brahms and James Brown, and developed his solo program, "Bach and Boombox," to help bring new audiences to classical music via popular songs. He attended Juilliard and the University of Michigan and later became one of the "President's Own" U.S. Marine Chamber Orchestra.
The cultural arts program features concert sponsors Bill and Penny Kincaid and support from the City of Wilmington.
