Harold Awards

About the Show

To be Harolded is an honour of the highest subversive order, bestowed upon outstanding and dedicated individuals who contribute to the strident glory of Toronto’s vibrant theatre and dance community, either on or off the stage. Harold was an omnipresent fan of the arts and a renowned heckler, his distinctive voice rustling up the scene for many years. Whether the only person in the house, or sitting front row centre at a sold-out gala, Harold Kandel was irrepressibly engaged with the stage. Born 101 years ago on May 30th, 1906, Harold is remembered as an equally endearing and annoying audience fixture. During performances, his unsolicited comments would fly freely in response to the action on stage, causing an exciting range of reactions from performers, producers and other audience members.

The 13th annual Harold Awards salute Toronto’s irreverent independent dance and theatre community.
