Autobiography: Chapters One Through Five

About the Show

DanceWorks, Toronto’s leading presenter of independent dance, will premiere the highly anticipated Autobiography: Chapters One Through Five, choreographed by pounds per square inch performance Artistic Director Gerry Trentham. His newest epic evening is a ground-breaking melding of dance, theatre, state-of-the-art video design and original music.

Five years in the making, Trentham weaves together five “chapters,” each developed in a different region of this country. Although not his personal autobiography, it draws on memories that were evoked for him on visits to Canada’s coasts, prairies, cities and lakes. He shares, as well, the frustrations and epiphanies of artmaking as each chapter in Autobiography explores an aspect of the creative process in relation to the specific environment in which it was created. The five chapters (the tub, the street, the lake, the coast and the field) are weaved seamlessly together in this full evening work as Trentham examines “the rural, the urban, the coastal, the mountainous, and the endless ‘prairieness’ of my Canadian evolution.” Stories and memories intertwine with surprising and revealing moments as Autobiography offers a rare glimpse into a creator’s journey.
