The Ragged Wing Ensemble presents Jean Claude Van Itallie’s The Serpent as its inaugural production. Created by the Open Theater in 1967, the play guides us through a non-linear collection of archetypal snapshot images from the Garden of Eden myth as a staging ground to grapple with humanity’s fall from grace and the loss of innocence in contemporary American culture.
The text interweaves the ancient story with appearances of 20th century icons such as JFK and Martin Luther King Jr., exploring transformation, self-destruction and rebirth. It asks the question: Having eaten the fruit of knowledge, now what path do we take? As humanity matures, how do we deal with the responsibility that accompanies consciousness? Members of the ensemble cast include: Keith Davis, Andrea Hart, Jeffrey Hoffman, Anna Shneiderman, and Frank Turco. Amy Sass directs.
