The African Company Presents Richard III

About the Show

The African Company Presents Richard III, written by Carlyle Brown, and directed by Victoria Erville, is based on a true story in 1821. Forty years before Lincoln ended slavery, and fifty years before black Americans earned the right to vote, the first black theatrical group in the country dared to present Shakespeare’s work with their portrayal of Richard the III. Carlyle Brown’s retelling of this little known, yet pivotal event, portrays the humor and challenges of this company as they dare to do the impossible.

Presented by the African-American Shakespeare Company.
