Written in 1677, Phedre is considered a milestone in classical French tragedy. Playwright Timberlake Wertenbaker is well equipped to adapt the piece, having written several plays with roots in mythology and Greek tragedy and adapted works by such varied playwrights as Sophocles, Euripides, Anouilh, and Pirandello. Phedre is directed by reknowned French theater artist Brigitte Jaques, and features Academy Award-winner Olympia Dukakis in the role of Oenone and Ellen Karas in the title role.
