Steeped in the popular music and style of the 1940s, Nightingales portrays a group of young American cadet nurses working alongside their British counterparts during World War II. As the nurses encounter the realities of war, they struggle with new cultures, new relationships, and what it means to be young in times of historical upheaval.
The play is the third YC production created in conjunction with Theatre Royal Bath, joining past productions of John Grimsley’s War Daddy and Sharman MacDonald’s Broken Hallelujah. This international collaboration brings American and British theater students together during a residency program on both sides of the Atlantic. The students participate in workshops and creative experiences with the playwrights that result in world premiere productions.
