About the Show

Originally written by Jean Giraudox during the Nazi occupation of France, The Madwoman of Chaillot was not performed until after the fall of Germany and the author’s death. The tale was a beautiful fairy tale in which the forces of poetry, love, and idealism win over those of materialism, cold science, and business. This romantic view holds true in thsi concert version of Jerry Herman’s Dear World, in which a lovable eccentric named Countess Aurelia and her misfit friends fight to save Paris from a group of business presidents, financiers, and bankers who plan to drill for oil in the beautiful old neighborhood of Chaillot. Two songs cut from the original Broadway production (one of them being “Through the Bottom of the Glass”) are restored for this production.
