Shakespeare’s The Taming of the Shrew tells the tale of a rich Paduan merchant with two daughters: the sweet and gentle Bianca, and the willful, sharp-tongued Katharina. Though Bianca has several suitors, she may not marry until the elder Kate has found a husband. When the boorish and conceited Petruchio announces his willingness to marry her, Bianca’s dilemma seems to be solved. But Petruchio may have met his match as he sets off to “tame” his new bride in this spirited battle of the sexes.
