Waiting for Lefty by Clifford Odets was, and still is, a universal call for power to be restored to the working class. Set in 1934 when unemployment was at 25%, workers were forced to fight for meager wages and strikes frequently failed, Odets used a taxi driver’s strike as inspiration for the play’s underlying conflict. Waiting For Lefty remains, to this day, a salient work on the ill effects of capitalism and on the way the common man can combat them.
