The Rivals

John Rubinstein directs Richard Brinsley Sheridan’s The Rivals, a dazzling, hilarious 18th century Restoration comedy of hidden identities and fastidious lovers. Sheridan’s trademarks were bitingly extravagant characters (each with a name emblematic of his/her nature) and delightful twists of plot. In this play, a country squire and an ensign compete for the hand of Lydia Languish.
