A charismatic con-man comes into a drought-ridden rural town in Depression-era America and changes the lives of a spinster, her father, and two brothers. The man claims to be a rainmaker and promises to bring rain for $100. It’s a silly idea, but the rainmaker is so refreshing and ingratiating that the family finally consents. Forthwith they begin banging on big bass drums to rattle the sky. The rainmaker turns his magic on the girl, persuading her that she has a very real beauty of her own. Eventually, rain does come…and so does love.
