The inaugural show of the Conejo Players 50th anniversary season, this classic Rodgers & Hammerstein musical is the tale of Mrs. Anna Leonowens, an English schoolteacher who arrives with her young son in Siam to teach the children of King Mongut. Although the King is keen to learn and absorb western culture, he is often at a loss as to how to reconcile his traditions with western ways. At the same time, Mrs. Anna struggles to understand a culture very different from her own, which includes slavery and female subservience. Mrs. Anna consistently exerts her western influence over the king’s children and also over a young slave (Tuptim), who was given to the king as a gift but loves another man (Lun Tha). The two lovers meet secretly and ultimately plan their escape, which ends in the death of Lun Tha and the capture of Tuptim.
With an extremely talented cast and such musical favorites as "I Whistle A Happy Tune," "Getting To Know You", "We Kiss In a Shadow", "Puzzlement", "Hello Young Lovers" and "Something Wonderful", the show is sure to be a delight for all ages.
