Outspoken (Shakespeare in Shackles) features the Bard’s most notorious loudmouths, all tossed together in the Clink – London’s medieval prison, situated around the corner from the original Globe Theatre in Southwark. Mothers were tossed in the Clink alongside murderers; their children sent out to beg for coins to pay the Jailor. In the mix were drunks, debtors, priests, political dissidents – anyone caught speaking out against the Powers that Be. Outspoken stars a variety of Shakespeare characters from the Canon (crossing the time/space continuum) to explore themes of classism and oppression while using humor, compassion and camaraderie. The goal is just to get out of here alive. And yes, it’s a poignant comedy.
