German author-director Heiner Muller’s Medea Texts is adapted for City Garage with additional material by Charles Duncombe. Muller used the Medea myth to mine the landscape of volatile contemporary Germany, mixing recent history and warring ideas with the ancient archetype of the betraying male-avenging female. In this City Garage production, Muller’s post-modern Medea is brought into a L.A. landscape of disconnection, and is re-created in a theatrical language specific to our time and place: absurd, maniac, sexual, comic and dangerous – a hallucinatory exploration of the question of who, in the end, is the betrayer and who is betrayed.
