“Be free, no guilt, be whoever you are, do whatever you want, just as long as you don’t hurt anyone.” This Utopian philosophy is at the heart of Hair, a show that set out to bring the excitement of the long-haired, peace-loving hippies of New York City’s East Village to the stage. The show follows a cross-section of young people who band together as a tribe and try to change the world. With a book and lyrics by Gerome Ragni and James Rado and music by Galt MacDermot, Hair’s score brought a new sound to Broadway with tunes such as “Aquarius,” “Let the Sunshine In,” “Easy to be Hard,” “Hashish” and “I Believe in Love.” As a social commentary of our times, Hair provides an insight into the philosophy of the flower children of the 1960s, and as the first and most successful of the rock musicals, it provides a new element in musical theatre entertainment.
This production of Hair is staged by Gary Krinke and John Vaughan, with vocal direction by Mark Henson and orchestra direction by Marcus Burger.
The Friday, March 16 performance is at 6:30pm.
