Cassatt and Degas: Unfinished Canvas

About the Show

Brush with Fate Productions presents the West Coast Premiere of M.L. Banyas’ Cassatt and Degas: Unfinished Canvas. Kimberly Jentzen Spingeld directs.

The second place winner in the 2003 Playwrights’ Circle International Playwriting Contest, the play explores the enigmatic relationship of Impressionist artists Mary Cassatt and Edgar Degas. Based on biographical information, the play surmises that Cassatt and Degas shared a love for each other as well as a love for painting. Shifting between the pair’s early days together from 1877-1888, and when they meet again in 1914, with World War I on the horizon, the work poignantly depicts their shared destiny of art and blindness, love and forgiveness, regret and understanding. Woven into the structure of the story are 12 reproductions of paintings by each artist, as well as one sculpture by Degas.
