New York City
He was a quintessential stage actor, a larger-than-life personality, a Hollywood star and a tabloid headline. He was John Barrymore. The charismatic persona of this legendary performer is vividly brought to life in William Luce’s Barrymore, starring Alan Brooks in the title role.
A theatrical tour-de-force, Barrymore premiered on Broadway in 1997. In the play, John Barrymore, once a Hollywood legend, makes a staggering effort to reclaim his former glory as a Broadway star. Taking center stage in a theater empty of everything but his humor and hubris, reminiscence and regrets, Barrymore strives to revive one of his greatest theatrical achievements, Shakespeare’s Richard III, while grappling with memories from his notorious past in the process. The production is directed by PCPA Artistic Director Emeritus Jack Shouse.
