About the Show
Arizona Theatre Company launched the National Latine Playwrights Award 30 years ago to amplify historically excluded Latine voices. Led by ATC Playwright-in-Residence and Festival Director Elaine Romero, the award has recognized outstanding Latine playwrights whose work has found success nationwide.
This year, ATC partners with community organizations for the NLP Award & Festival. Monica Villalobos, president of the Arizona Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, emcees the event, with Jerry Ruiz, Associate Professor at ASU’s School of Music, Dance, and Theatre, directing the reading. A unique award by Phoenix artist Zarco Guerrero will be presented to winner Edwin Sánchez. Other partners include Xico and the Arizona Mexico Commission.
Sánchez’s Lottery Boy follows 15-year-old Paco, whose lottery win brings soaring highs, crushing lows, betrayal, and questions of belonging. Piercing the veil between worlds, the play reveals the enduring power of a father’s love.
