La Jolla Playhouse to Present William Finn and James Lapine's Little Miss Sunshine
The Playhouse will present the world premiere musical Little Miss Sunshine, by Tony Award winners William Finn and James Lapine (February 15- March 27). The musical, to be directed by Lapine, is based on the Oscar-winning film on the same name about a dysfunctional family that takes a cross-country car trip when daughter Olive enters a children's beauty pageant.
The season will open with Lisa Peterson's world premiere production of Annie Weisman's Surf Report (June 5-July 11), which focuses on a woman who is trying to balance her demanding career and husband just as her estranged daughter returns for a family emergency.
Also on tap will be a new staging of Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream, directed by Christopher Ashley (July 20-August 22); Robert Woodruff and Bill Camp's adaptation of Dostoevsky's Notes from Underground (September 17-October 17), directed by Woodruff; and Liesl Tommy's production of Lynn Nottage's Ruined (November 16-December 19).
Meanhile, the production of A Gentleman's Guide to Love and Murder, a new musical, with book and lyrics by Robert L. Freedman and music and lyrics by Steven Lutvak, has been postponed.
