The world premiere production of Dominique Morisseau’s Pipeline opened last night at Lincoln Center’s Mitzi E. Newhouse Theater. Lileana Blain-Cruz directs the production, set to run through August 27.

The plot follows Nya Joseph (Pittman), a dedicated inner-city public high school teacher who is committed to her students’ achievement. At the same time, she sends her only son, Omari (Smallwood), to a private boarding school. When Omari gets involved in a controversial incident that threatens him with expulsion from his school, Nya is forced to reconcile Omari’s rage and her own parental decisions as she rallies to save her son.

The cast of Pipeline includes Tasha Lawrence (If I Forget), Morocco Omari (A Streetcar Named Desire), Karen Pittman (Disgraced), Namir Smallwood (Man in Love), Jaime Lincoln Smith (Holler If Ya Hear Me), and Heather Velazquez (Another Word for Beauty).

The production features sets by Matt Saunders, costumes by Montana Levi Blanco, lighting by Yi Zhao, sound by Justin Ellington, and projections by Hannah Wasileski.
