On April 18, the Wagner College Theatre will premiere Goddess Wheel, a new musical by Hair composer Galt MacDermot, with book and lyrics by Matty Selman. The show, which runs through April 29, will be staged in the Music Hall at Staten Island’s Snug Harbor Cultural Center.
Inspired by Lysistrata, Aristophanes’ 5th century B.C. Greek comedy, Goddess Wheel tells the story of the Peloponnesian War between Sparta and Athens. The women, fed up with the war, decide to withhold sex until the men sign a peace treaty bringing the war to an end.
Goddess Wheel is directed by Rusty Curcio, WCT’s Head of Dance. James Higgins serves as music director. The pit band will be MacDermot’s New Pulse Jazz Band.
The cast of 34 includes Danielle Dallacco (Lysistrata), Leighann Colin (Penelope/Persephon), Ilana Bolotsky (Young Widow), Tara Kirk and Ashley Burger (Women of Sparta), Caroline LaTorre, Heather Kirschenbauer and Erica Weiderlight (Goddesses), Matt Sydney (The Chancellor), Ryan Cole (Spartan Envoy/Soldier Ghost), and Andrew Khouri and Matt Favetta (Men of Athens). John Jamiel, Head of Acting at Wagner, plays Oracle/Hates.
