
Opera singer and Tony Award nominee Giorgio Tozzi died on May 30 at age 88, according to NPR.
Tozzi first appeared on Broadway in 1948 in The Rape of Lucretia and received a Tony nomination for his performance as Tony in the 1979 revival of Frank Loesser’s The Most Happy Fella.
Tozzi dubbed the singing voice of Rossano Brazzi as Emile DeBecque in the 1958 film version of South Pacific and played the role in numerous productions, most notably the 1967 Music Theater of Lincoln Center production opposite Florence Henderson.
He appeared in numerous operas during his career, including La Giocanda, The Marriage of Figaro, Eugene Onegin, Boris Godunov, and Vanessa. He was featured on numerous recordings of opera, including three that earned Grammy Awards.
