The ”Aida” star will play the Witch in Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine’s musical favorite.
Broadway's Heather Headley is set to star in Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine’s Into The Woods from July 21-27 at St. Louis venue the Muny, the nation’s largest outdoor musical theater. Gary Griffin will direct.
The production is choreographed by Chris Bailey with music direction by Brad Haak, scenic design by Michael Schweikardt, costume design by Andrea Lauer, lighting design by Rob Denton, sound design by John Shivers and Hugh Sweeney, and video design by Matthew Young.
"Heather's extraordinary talent, passion and humor will be thrilling in this role," said Griffin in a statement. "When we met to talk about the part I was thrilled by her ideas and energy. She's going to give The Muny audience a once in a lifetime experience."
Headley will play the Witch in this production, which marks the Muny premiere of Into the Woods. In addition, it will be Ms. Headley’s first performance in a musical in America since her 2000 Tony-winning performance in the original Broadway production of Elton John and Tim Rice’s Aida.
Before taking on the lead role in Aida, Headley made her Broadway debut as the original Nala in Disney's The Lion King. Recently, she performed the role of Rachel Marron in the musical adaptation of Whitney Houston’s 1992 movie The Bodyguard at London’s Adelphi Theatre from November 2012 until August 2013. She was nominated for an Olivier Award and a WhatsOnStage Award for her performance.
