Stage veterans including Amy Adams, Cate Blanchett, Bradley Cooper, and Ethan Hawke woke up to good news this morning when the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced the nominations for this year’s Academy Awards.

Adams, who last appeared onstage in the Public Theater production of Into the Woods, and Cooper, expected to return to Broadway in The Elephant Man, received nods for their supporting performances in the Best Picture-nominated film American Hustle. Blanchett, former artistic director of Australia’s Sydney Theatre Company, and Sally Hawkins (Broadway’s Mrs. Warren’s Profession) received acting nods for their work in Woody Allen’s Blue Jasmine, with screenwriter Allen, the scribe of this season’s Broadway musical Bullets Over Broadway, garnering a nomination for his work. Similarly, recent Macbeth star Ethan Hawke received a Best Adapted Screenplay nod for his work on the film Before Midnight.

Book of Mormon scribe Robert Lopez and his wife, Kristen Anderson-Lopez, were honored with a Best Original Song nomination for “Let It Go,” from Frozen, which also received a nod for Best Animated Feature. Tony and Olivier winner Judi Dench picked up yet another nomination for her work, this time in the movie Philomena. Olivier winner Chiwetel Ejiofor saw his name mentioned for his performance in 12 Years a Slave.

John Wells’ screen adaptation of Tracy Letts’ Tony- and Pulitzer Prize-winning drama August: Osage County received only a pair of Oscar nominations — for actresses Meryl Streep and Julia Roberts (who, coincidentally, shared her Broadway debut in 2006's Three Days of Rain with fellow nominee Bradley Cooper). The film was not recognized in other categories for which it was eligible, including Best Picture and Best Adapted Screenplay.
