The musicals Curtains, West Side Story and Songs for a New World are just a small portion of the 2009-10 just announced by Pacific Conservatory of the Performing Arts (PCPA). In the coming year, the company will also offer a world premiere, a production of Shakespeare and a revival of a popular contemporary comedy.

The world premiere will be José Cruz González’s Invierno (August 27 – September 19, 2010). This new play, from the author of The Heart’s Desire, is a reworking of Shakespeare’s The Winter’s Tale, reset in 19th century California. As with the Bard’s play, Invierno explores love that turns into an obsession which fractures friendships and shatters families.

The theater’s season will begin in late fall with a musical version of The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe (November 5 – December 23). In the new year, the theater will produce Shakespeare’s Macbeth (February 18 – March 7, 2010), followed by its annual new play series, InterPlay: The Stage Between (March 12 – 21).

Over the course of next spring and summer, the theater will produce the John Kander and Fred Ebb backstage murder mystery musical Curtains (April 15-July 3). Also on tap is Sylvia (June 17 – July 25), A.R. Gurney’s comedy about a relationship threatened by a dog. The PCPA summer season will be rounded out with West Side Story (July 9 – August 22) and Jason Robert Brown’s song-cycle, Songs For A New World (August 6 – September 12).
