PAE Live! Announces Cast for The Romance of Magno Rubio

PAE Live! in association with Good Shepard Ambulance Company, has announced casting for its presentation of Lonnie Carter’s OBIE Award-winning play The Romance of Magno Rubio, at [Inside] the Ford. The work will be presented both in English, and in a world premiere Tagalog translation of the play,Ang Romansa ni Magno Rubio. There will be five performances each week: three in English, and two in Tagalog, to run November 4 – December 11. Both interpretations will be directed by translator Bernardo Bernardo.

The Romance of Magno Rubio is a stage adaptation of Carlo Bulosan’s short story about a Filipino migrant worker in 1930’s California. The play utilizes clever word play and Philippine love songs to reveal the the struggles and dreams of migrant workers and their yearning for home and a better life.

The cast includes Jon Jon Briones (Magno Rubio), Antoine Diel (Prudencio), Elizabeth Rainey (Clarabelle), and Muni Zano (narrator), all of whom will appear in both the English and Tagalog casts. Giovanni Ortega and Frederick Edwards share the role of Nick; Erick Esteban and Gelo Francisco are Claro; Eymard Cabling and Jet Montelibano double as Atoy.

The Romance of Magno Rubio premiered Off-Broadway in 2002 at New York’s Ma-Yi Theatre Company where it received eight OBIE citations. That production subsequently traveled to the Cultural Center of the Philippines in Manila and received its West Coast premiere at the Laguna Playhouse thereafter.

Carter’s other works include Chine Calls, The Sovereign State of Boogedy Boogedy, The Gulliver Plays, and most recently The Lost Boys of Sudan.
