A musical version of the Oscar-winning 1996 documentary When We Were Kings is in the works, to be produced by David Sonenberg and adapted for the stage by Shelley Marcus.

Centering on the 1974 boxing match between Muhammad Ali and George Forman in Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of the Congo (then Zaire), the musical will feature characters that also include James Brown, B.B. King, the Pointer Sisters, and many others. Songs are culled from the R&B classics of the 1970s, along with the Fugees' "Rumble in the Jungle."

A workshop is scheduled for the spring of 2019 with plans for a full stage musical production in 2020.
