Kenny Ortega will direct the film version of the Tony Award winning musical In the Heights, while Lin Manuel-Miranda, the show’s Tony Award winning composer and the production’s original star, will reprise his performance in the film, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
Ortega most recently directed the Michael Jackson documentary, This Is It, and served as creative director for Jackson’s memorial. Among his other screen directing credits are the High School Musical films. Additionally, he choreographed Dirty Dancing.
Heights, featuring music and lyrics by Miranda, and a book by Quiara Alegría Hudes, focuses on the tight-knit community at the top of the island of Manhattan and the hopes and dreams of three generations as they struggle to forge an identity in a neighborhood on the brink of transition.
