Into the Woods Set for Summer Mounting at the Hollywood Bowl

The Hollywood Bowl has added Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine's fairy tale-inspired musical Into the Woods to its summer schedule, offering three performances from July 26-28.

Featuring a score by Sondheim and a book by Lapine, Into the Woods first opened on Broadway in 1987, earning three Tony Awards for score, book, and lead actress (Joanna Gleason who starred as Baker's Wife). The musical returned to Broadway in 2002, earning the Tony for Best Revival of a Musical, and was made into a feature film in 2014, directed by Rob Marshall. The musical was additionally mounted off-Broadway at the Public's Delacorte Theater in 2012 and Roundabout's Laura Pels Theatre (a Fiasco Theater production) in 2015.

Into the Woods is described on the Hollywood Bowl website as follows: "The Hollywood Bowl becomes an enchanted world of magic beans, towering giants, and handsome princes as the setting for our annual fully staged musical — the darkly humorous and hauntingly beautiful masterpiece by Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine, Into the Woods. As the Baker and his Wife travel through the forest trying to reverse a witch's curse, they come across Cinderella, Little Red Riding Hood, Rapunzel, and other famous storybook characters all in search of their own wishes…but 'happily ever after' turns into a tale of 'be careful what you wish for' when granted wishes have unexpected effects. This is Sondheim at his finest, with such memorable songs as 'Children Will Listen' and 'No One Is Alone.'"
