Full Cast, Creative Team Set for Stew’s Passing Strange

De’adre Aziza, Daniel Breaker, Eisa Davis, Colman Domingo, Chad Goodridge, and Rebecca Jones will star in the world premiere of Passing Strange, a new musical written by Stew, Heidi Rodewald, and Annie Dorsen, that will play Berkeley Repertory Theatre’s Thrust Stage, October 19-December 3. The show will then move to New York’s Public Theatre, January 16-February 18.

The show, which was developed at the Sundance Institute, the Public and Berkeley Rep, takes audiences on an international journey from L.A. to Amsterdam, Berlin, and beyond using blues, rock and roll, gospel and pop music written by Stew and Rodewald, who also head the band The Negro Problem. Dorsen, who is also directing the show, has helmed such productions as Belgrade Trilogy and The Blue Bird.

In addition to Stew and Rodewald, the show’s on-stage band will include Marc Doten (bass), Russ Kleiner (percussion), and Jon Spurney (guitar, keyboards, co-musical direction). The creative team includes David Korins (sets), Annie Smart (costumes), Kevin Adams (lighting), and Jake Rodriguez (sound).

Aziza has appeared Off-Broadway with The Classical Theatre of Harlem and is a noted jazz vocalist. Breaker co-starred on Broadway in Well and Off-Broadway in Fabulation and Pericles. Davis wrote and starred in the play Angela’s Mixtape. Domingo’s stage credits include The People’s Temple and Bright Ideas. Goodridge’s stage credits include The Debate over Courtney O’Connell. Jones recently appeared in the New York International Fringe Festival production of Fallen Angel and she was seen in the L.A. production of Caroline, or Change.
